2017 Freight Academy
The next offering of the highly acclaimed Freight Academy will be held April 30-May 5, 2017 in New Brunswick, NJ.
The Freight Academy is a unique six-day comprehensive immersion program designed for public agency personnel focused on goods movement. The purpose of the program is to ensure current and future public-sector decisions and investments are made with an understanding of the comprehensive supply chain. The program consists of three components: pre-study materials, a one-week immersion program, and a group Capstone project which is continued after the academy to further promote peer exchange.
The 2017 Freight Academy builds on previous core curriculum elements, addressing emerging freight trends and considerations and focusing on multimodal industrial development, freight services, urban freight movement and facilities, mobility and safety challenges including truck parking, impacts on freight from emerging connected and automated vehicle technologies, integration of sustainability practices in the supply chain, and linking how freight investment translates into economic development. The program is administered by the Eastern Transportation Coalition with support from FHWA and complements the Federal Highway Administration’s Freight Professional Development Program (FPD).
The Academy is open to any public sector staff whose planning, operational, and/or management work impact goods movement decisions. Past participants have come from various transportation related agencies – including DOTs, MPOs, Ports, Toll and Economic Development – at the Federal, state and local level, from throughout the United States and several Canadian provinces.
More information about the freight academy program can be found at the Freight Academy website.
“The Freight Academy was one of the best ‘emergency downloads’ you can get to come up to speed on goods movement, multimodal transportation and transportation planning. The presentations from freight professionals are entertaining as well as instructive, and the field trips provide visual reinforcement of the lessons learned.” – Scott Douglas, Maritime Program Manager, New Jersey DOT, 2010 Freight Academy Graduate
