Report Released – Traffic Message Channel Codes

Traffic Message Channel Codes: Impact and Use within the Eastern Transportation Coalition’s Vehicle Probe Project (December 2015)

This report was written to document the source, governance and intellectual property issues related to use of the TMC codes by government agencies, explore the suitability of the TMC codes for a variety traffic data reporting, and recommend best practice and future direction to the Coalition and its member agencies. While market pressure has helped to resolve a number of issues initially affecting agencies there are many issues that remain and should be considered by agencies using TMC codes, or considering alternatives to TMC codes. This report addresses those issues and includes recommendations for consideration by agencies using TMC codes.

The work effort for this report was funded through the 2012 Multistate Corridor Operations and Management Program (MCOM) grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), received by the Eastern Transportation Coalition.
